Graduate Qualification: Geographer/Ecologist, specialist in environmental management; the graduates are well-trained participating in scientific, academic and/or applied projects and activities in the position of Research Scientist, Environmental Engineer, Environmental Compliance Officer, Teacher / Lecturer in Environmental Science; the graduates of the department are prepared to work at research and planning institutions, state agencies, ministries, and committees, in the secondary/high-school and the universities, at private enterprises, and in other organizations concerned with analysis, assessment, training, and/or decision-making in the fields of environmental and nature resources management.

Research Strategy - Research on the theoretical foundations of environmental management and conservation, land resources assessment and land-use optimization, protected areas planning, natural indication of environmental contamination, global climate change, integral monitoring of aquatic ecosystems, geochemistry of urban environment, geoecology of the North, remote sensing, environmental modelling and data analysis, GIS development, environmental insurance and audit, legislative aspects in evironmental management.

Accomplished Research - Geography of the World Ocean, surface water quality, theoretical and experimental studies of aquatic ecosystems, background concentrations of trace elements in Polar regions, modelling of anthropogenic climate change.

Prospective Research - theoretical principles of environmental management, integral assessment of land and water resources, geographic basis of environmental systems monitoring, historical monitoring of the environment, mathematical modelling of natural and anthropogenic processes, development of geographic information systems with decision making applications, analysis of remotely sensed data, ecology of settlements, environment as a part of cultural heritage, design of the GIS for the Russian Arctic, research of regional environmental issues.
